{"id":2276,"date":"2021-11-28T19:04:54","date_gmt":"2021-11-29T01:04:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/?p=2276"},"modified":"2023-03-23T05:31:56","modified_gmt":"2023-03-23T10:31:56","slug":"getting-started-with-terraform-and-azure-overview-and-setup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/staging2\/getting-started-with-terraform-and-azure-overview-and-setup\/","title":{"rendered":"Getting started with Terraform and Azure: Overview and Setup"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"176\" height=\"186\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Terraform_VerticalLogo_Color_RGB-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2303\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you landed here, I assume you know what Terraform is and why to use it.&nbsp; If that\u2019s not the case, check out the monolog on my video below that covers those topics.&nbsp; This post, however, is dedicated to the steps required to prepare a Windows 10 computer for Terraform.&nbsp; The steps are similar if using Windows 11. &nbsp;The most significant difference is the start menu is in the center bottom of your screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"ast-oembed-container\" style=\"height: 100%;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Getting started with Terraform and Azure: Overview and Setup\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/PD8OR4Tmjxo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three components required before using Terraform\nwith Azure.&nbsp; You need, well, Terraform,\nthe Azure Command Line Interface (CLI), and an editor.&nbsp; The example here will use VSCode for the\neditor because it\u2019s free and works very well.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As already stated, Windows 10 is used to configure the\nenvironment.&nbsp; Don\u2019t feel left out if you\nare not using Windows. &nbsp;The steps are\nsimilar for Linux and macOS.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s get started with Terraform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1>Terraform<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>First, download Terraform from the link below. Then, select the version that matches your system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.terraform.io\/downloads.html\">https:\/\/www.terraform.io\/downloads.html<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Terraform comes as a single executable.&nbsp; It\u2019s not packaged as an installable\nfile.&nbsp; We need to extract the file and\nmove it to a folder on the computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Create a folder at the root of the C:\\ drive called\nTerraform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"658\" height=\"358\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Terraform-Folder.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2277\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/staging2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Terraform-Folder.png 658w, https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/staging2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Terraform-Folder-300x163.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 658px) 100vw, 658px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Terraform Folder<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, go to System Environment Variables on the system.&nbsp; You should see something like the image\nbelow.&nbsp; That indicates Terraform is\ninstalled.&nbsp; Close the command prompt, and\nlet\u2019s move on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"419\" height=\"224\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Test-Terraform.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2282\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/staging2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Test-Terraform.png 419w, https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/staging2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Test-Terraform-300x160.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 419px) 100vw, 419px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Test Terraform <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\">\n<p> If the command doesn\u2019t work, verify the path statement is entered correctly, and the terraform.exe file is in the correct directory. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h1>Azure CLI<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, let\u2019s install the Azure CLI.&nbsp; Use the Azure CLI to connect to and deploy\nresources in Azure.&nbsp; Go to the download\nlink below.&nbsp; Notice there are options for\nmacOS and Linux on the left side of the page for those so inclined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/cli\/azure\/install-azure-cli-windows?tabs=azure-cli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/cli\/azure\/install-azure-cli-windows?tabs=azure-cli<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Download the MSI installer and run once finished\ndownloading.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"521\" height=\"406\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Azure-CLI-Setup.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/staging2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Azure-CLI-Setup.png 521w, https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/staging2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Azure-CLI-Setup-300x234.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 521px) 100vw, 521px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Azure CLI Setup <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You will need to agree to the terms and can click next to\nkeep the default settings.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once finished, open a new command prompt, and type \u201caz\nversion\u201d.&nbsp; You should get a response\nsimilar to below.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"462\" height=\"304\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Test-Azure-CLI.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/staging2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Test-Azure-CLI.png 462w, https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/staging2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Test-Azure-CLI-300x197.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 462px) 100vw, 462px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>That indicates the Azure CLI is installed. Close the command\nprompt, and let\u2019s move to the next step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h1>VSCode<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Like before, we need to download a file.&nbsp; The VSCode installer is found at the link\nbelow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/code.visualstudio.com\/Download\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">https:\/\/code.visualstudio.com\/Download<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Download the version that corresponds to your system.&nbsp; For windows, use the User Installer if you\ndon\u2019t have admin access to the computer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once downloaded, run the installer.&nbsp; Accept the terms and click through the\ndefault settings.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"656\" height=\"511\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Install-VSCode.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/staging2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Install-VSCode.png 656w, https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/staging2\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Install-VSCode-300x234.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 656px) 100vw, 656px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Install VSCode <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Launch VSCode once finished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>VSCode is installed, but we\u2019re not finished yet.&nbsp; Go to Extensions on the left side of the\nscreen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"210\" height=\"264\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/VSCode-Extensions.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2286\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> VSCode Extensions <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>From here, we\u2019ll install three extensions.&nbsp; An extension adds functionality to\nVSCode.&nbsp; It adds features such as advanced\nlanguage support, autocomplete, and other features that make VSCode easier to\nuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first one we\u2019ll install is \u201cAzure CLI tools\u201d, search for\nand install that extension. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"269\" height=\"125\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Azure-CLI-Tools.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2287\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Azure CLI Tools <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, search for and install the HashiCorp Terraform\nextension.&nbsp; Look for the one by HashiCorp<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"225\" height=\"63\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Terraform-Extension.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2288\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Terraform Extension <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, search for \u201cBracket Pair Colorizer\u201d.&nbsp; Install version 2.&nbsp; Bracket Pair Colorizer is optional but\nhelpful for formatting with complex files.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"283\" height=\"57\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Bracket-Pair-Colorizer-Extention.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2289\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> Bracket Pair Colorizer Extension <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h1>Test the Environment<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a couple more steps before we finish.
