{"id":965,"date":"2019-02-04T02:05:29","date_gmt":"2019-02-04T02:05:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/?p=965"},"modified":"2023-03-23T23:32:32","modified_gmt":"2023-03-24T04:32:32","slug":"six-ways-to-save-with-azure-iaas-servers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/staging2\/six-ways-to-save-with-azure-iaas-servers\/","title":{"rendered":"Six Ways to Save with Azure IaaS Servers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignleft\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"272\" height=\"202\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ciraltos.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/09\/AzureVM.png\" alt=\"AzureVM\" class=\"wp-image-235\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In this post and accompanying video I outline six ways to save money when using Azure VM\u2019s.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"480\" height=\"270\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Ug6bN895-sk\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<h3>6, Unmanaged Disks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a lot of good reasons to use Managed Disks but\nthey differ with Unmanaged Disks in their price structure.&nbsp; Managed disks are billed at a set rate per\nmonth.&nbsp; Unmanaged Disks are billed based\non blob storage usage.&nbsp; Because of that,\nunmanaged disks are cheaper on servers that don\u2019t store a lot of data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have test, demo, or other servers that don\u2019t need Managed disks, you may save some money using Unmanaged Disks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/pricing\/details\/managed-disks\/\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/azure.microsoft.com\/en-us\/pricing\/details\/managed-disks\/<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>5, Azure Policies<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Azure Policies enforce rules on what and where resources can be deployed.&nbsp; Use Policies to prevent un-approved resources from getting deployed.&nbsp;&nbsp; For example, a policy can be used to prevent expensive M Series VM\u2019s from being deployed on your subscription.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/governance\/policy\/overview\" target=\"_blank\">https:\/\/docs.microsoft.com\/en-us\/azure\/governance\/policy\/overview<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3>4, Shutdown Servers (Not all of them!)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Virtual Machines are only charged when they are running.&nbsp; If you have test or development servers that\ndon\u2019t need to be on 24&#215;7, schedule them to shut down when not in use.&nbsp; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep in mind, it\u2019s not enough to shut down the VM in the OS, the VM\u2019s need to be deallocated to stop charges.&nbsp; Take a look at the Azure Automation solution linked below to automatically start and stop VM\u2019s on a schedule.&nbsp; No familiar with Azure Automation?
