Azure Virtual Desktop Hybrid has officially reached general availability, giving organizations a new way to deliver virtual desktops and remote applications from their own data centers while still leveraging Azure services for connectivity and management. If you have been holding off on AVD because you were not ready to move every session host to the cloud, this release changes the conversation.
In this post, I walk through how AVD Hybrid works, six reasons it might be a great fit for your environment, and a couple of situations where it may not be the best choice.
How AVD Hybrid Works
With AVD Hybrid, you can run Azure Virtual Desktop session hosts in your data center while still taking advantage of Azure’s cloud-based connectivity and management services. Session hosts can run on Windows Server 2016 or later, as well as Windows 10 and Windows 11 Enterprise.
Both virtual and physical session hosts are supported, but physical devices must be headless. In other words, users cannot log directly into the hardware, so servers in a data center are fine, but a desktop or laptop sitting on someone’s desk is not supported for AVD Hybrid session hosts.
Hybrid-enabled session hosts use the Azure Arc agent along with the AVD Hybrid extension. Together, these components register the host with Azure Virtual Desktop, connect it to a host pool, and manage the computer and user connections. The session hosts make an outbound connection to AVD, which means you do not need to open inbound firewall ports, although outbound internet access is still required.

It is also worth understanding that AVD Hybrid works with the session host itself, not the underlying hypervisor. Because of that, it is compatible with virtually any hypervisor platform.

Every organization has different technical requirements, business constraints, and compliance needs, so the reasons below are not hard rules. They are simply common scenarios where AVD Hybrid makes a lot of sense.
Reason 1: Protecting Existing Infrastructure Investments
Many organizations want to modernize their virtual desktop environment but have already invested heavily in on-premises hardware. Servers are not cheap, and moving immediately from a capital expense model to an operating expense model is not always realistic.
AVD Hybrid allows organizations to continue using their existing hardware while gradually transitioning workloads to Azure over time. As hardware reaches end of life, workloads can migrate at a pace that fits the business, and Arc-enabled session hosts provide a bridge into cloud-based management and a broader hybrid cloud strategy along the way.
Reason 2: Handling Capacity Spikes and Seasonal Demand
Think of a tax preparation company during tax season, or a retailer preparing for holiday demand. Traditional on-premises VDI environments often need enough hardware to support peak usage, even if that capacity sits idle the rest of the time. With AVD Hybrid, organizations can leverage existing on-premises resources while scaling into Azure when demand increases. Once that spike is over, cloud resources can be reduced or removed, helping control costs while still providing flexibility.
Reason 3: Modernizing Existing RDS Deployments
This reason may sound similar to the first, but it is specifically focused on organizations running Microsoft RDS farms. If an organization has invested in RDS session hosts hardware and licensing, AVD Hybrid lets them continue leveraging those investments while modernizing the connection and management infrastructure. Azure Virtual Desktop can replace components like RD Gateway and connection brokers with Azure-managed services, simplifying the architecture and providing more flexible connectivity options.
Reason 4: Application Proximity and Low Latency Requirements
Some workloads perform best when they stay close to the applications and data they rely on. Think CAD applications, latency-sensitive databases, medical imaging systems, or media processing workloads. The initial connection to a session host goes through AVD gateway services, and RDP ShortPath can help optimize traffic flow and keep session data on local networks whenever possible.
Reason 5: Creating a Consistent End User Experience
Some organizations manage both Azure cloud-hosted and on-premises virtual desktops, which can lead to different connection methods, different client applications, and confusion for end users. With Windows 365, AVD, and AVD Hybrid, users access desktops and applications through the same Windows App experience, whether the session host resides in Azure or in an on-premises data center. That consistency can simplify support and improve the overall user experience.
Reason 6: Supporting Regulated and Restricted Environments
Some organizations simply cannot move session hosts into the public cloud due to regulatory requirements or data sovereignty concerns. AVD Hybrid provides a middle ground. Organizations can maintain control of their session hosts and user data within their own facility while still benefiting from Azure and Azure Virtual Desktop services for connectivity and management.
When AVD Hybrid May Not Be the Best Fit
Significant Internet Connectivity Limitations
Because session hosts are on-premises, it is easy to assume internet access is not a major factor with AVD Hybrid, but it is. The initial user connection occurs through Azure over the internet, and management operations are cloud-based. Even when RDP ShortPath is used to optimize session traffic, control plane communication still depends on internet connectivity to Azure services. Private endpoints can help limit internet exposure, but network connectivity back to Azure is still required.
Organizations That Simply Do Not Want to Use the Cloud
Sometimes the decision has nothing to do with technology. It may be based on business strategy, available skills, operational proficiencies, or general concerns with cloud adoption. If the goal is to avoid moving virtual desktops to the clouc, AVD Hybrid is not the right solution. Even though session hosts stay in your data center, the service itself remains cloud-based: Azure Virtual Desktop handles brokering and connectivity, while Azure Arc is used for host management.
There is also an important licensing consideration. The multi-session version of the Windows Enterprise client is not supported outside of Azure, which means organizations that need a multi-user desktop experience on-premises are limited to Windows Server, and that requires RDS client access licenses.
Finally, it is important to understand that AVD Hybrid does not provide the same level of infrastructure management that Azure-hosted AVD does. Tasks like image management, session host deployment, and FSLogix storage management remain the customer’s responsibility. Since AVD Hybrid works with the session hosts rather than the hypervisor platform, features like Autoscale and Start VM on Connect are not available for on-premises session hosts.
Closing Thoughts
AVD Hybrid opens up some powerful hybrid cloud scenarios, but like any platform decision, success comes down to your organization’s specific requirements. If AVD Hybrid looks like a good fit for you, it is worth checking out Microsoft partner solutions that can help close some of the management gaps mentioned above.
